Binary thinking

Postby Gonzo on Sat Apr 11, 2009 7:12 am

I was informed yesterday that my thinking is binary. I'm not sure if that was a compliment or not. Being a dedicated computer programmer, I have no problem with that statement. I do tend to think in terms of black and white, and that has been pointed out to me before that it has limitations. I suppose so. It also has some advantages in that it greatly simplifies things. Either something IS, or it ISN'T. And if it IS, that implies also what it is not. That is, in order to be something, it must be differentiated from other stuff.

I think this is what is at the bottom of recent discussions, or perhaps disagreements about non-dualism, the self and the ego. If, as Descartes said, I am because I think, then that includes all of what I am, which is a combination of self, ego, mind, soul, higher being, lower being, tonal, and nagual, and, according to my binary approach, I am NOT other. As an old Zen saying goes, "I alone am the honored one."
Is that so?
