Death to Chucky

Once again, having enountered more commentaries about enlightenment a key element seems to be the death of the ego. This seems patently ridiculous to me. If the ego truly dies, or somehow becomes non-existent, what/who is it that continues to think? (Cogito, again...) Something is still aware, is still conscious, is still "in the world", is still thinking. What ought we call it?

I consider certain Zen masters to be enlightened beings. I consider don Juan and don Genaro and most of the Naguals of CC's works likewise to be enlightened beings. I consider Jed McKenna to be an enlightened being in the current time. Each is utterly unique and distinct. What to call that unique essence?

Ah, but wait. I believe I recall a similar question being put to McKenna, and his rather clever reply was that for the sake of communicating he donned his ego. Son-of-a-gun.
Is that so?
