Mother Earth and the Warrior's Way

“Don Genaro proceeded to perform then an act of magical intent for my benefit. Lying on his stomach, he executed a series of dazzling movements. He became a blob of luminosity that seemed to be swimming, as if the ground were a pool.”

“Don Juan said that it was Genaro's way of hugging the immense earth, and that in spite of the difference in size, the earth acknowledged Genaro's gesture. The sight of Genaro's movements and the explanation of them replaced my loneliness with sublime joy.”

In these prosaic days of ours, there is a craze among many western modern civilizations for defiling Mother Earth just for the sake of doing so; and they call this “conquering the earth.” What a desecration!

The Warrior’s Way, however, this idea of subjecting Nature or Mother Earth to the commands or service of man according to his selfish desire has never been cherished. For Mother Earth to us has never been uncharitable, it is not a kind of enemy to be brought under man’s power.

We of the Warrior’s Way have never conceived Mother Earth in the form of an opposing power. On the contrary, Mother Earth has been our constant friend and companion, who is to be absolutely trusted in spite of the frequent earthquakes, tornados and such assailing us. The idea of conquest is abhorrent.

To look around for objects to conquer is not the Warrior’s attitude towards Mother Earth.

Yes, we can have western/modern civilization, but the purpose is not to “conquer” Mother Earth, but to be impressed with its beauty, grandeur, and aloofness; it is also to worship a sublime morning sun rising gorgeously from behind the multicolored clouds.

This is not necessarily an act of sun worship, as Don Juan mentioned we are slivers of the sun, though there is nothing spiritually degrading in that. The sun is the great benefactor of all life on earth, and it is only proper for us Warriors to approach a benefactor of any kind, animate or inanimate, with a deep feeling of gratitude and appreciation.
